The Grumman F9F Panther was the Navy's most extensively used fighter during the Korean conflict. The F9F-5 was the most numerous of the Panthers. The F9F-5 was similar to the F9F-4 but initially powered by the Pratt & Whitney J48-P-2 derivative of the Rolls-Royce Tay; the prototype flew on Dec. 21, 1949, and 616 were built , delivered between Nov. 5, 1950 and Jan. 13, 1953. The F9F-5 Panther had a maximum speed of 579 mph, cruising speed of 481 mph, initial climb rat of 5,090 ft per minute, service ceiling of 42,800 ft, and range of 1,300 miles.
