Beech T-34C Turbo Mentor / Beech 45 model airplane The Beech Model 45 Mentor, on which the T-34 is based, was first flown on December 2, 1948. The much later T-34C was turbine power. The powerplant chosen by Beech for the conversion was a Pratt & Whitney Aircraft of Canada PT6A-25. The YT-34C test plane was first flown on September 21, 1973, with the first T-34C Turbo-Mentor entering service with the USN's Naval Air Training Command in November 1977. The T-34C had a maximum cruising speed of 246 mph at 17,000 ft, service ceiling above 30,000 ft, and maximum range at 20,000 ft of 814 miles.
