Since the end of World War II, aircraft manufacturers in several parts of the world have sporadically tried to develop tiltrotor and convertible aircraft. The Bell/Boeing V-22 Osprey is the first result of a major effort to develop the tiltrotor concept for practical use, and to bring such an airplane into series production. With the first Bell-assembled prototype making its maiden flight on March 19, 1989, the Osprey is designed to combine the vertical takeoff and landing capability of a helicopter and the high forward wingborne speed of a turboprop transport. The Osprey has a conventional cabin which is designed for a total of 24 troops with full combat equipment, and the crew consists of 2 pilots and a crew chief. The V-22 Osprey has a maximum cruising speed of 115 mph in helicopter mode at sea level and 361 mph in airplane mode at optimum altitude. It has a range of 592 miles in the assault transport role, or 2,418miles in the ferry role. This model is in precision polymer to exacting specifications. It is hand painted, and comes fully assembled with removable desk stand.
