The first prototype of this airplane was initially flown on October 20, 1948, a low/mid-wing monoplane with swept wings and tail surfaces, and a lengthy fuselage to house fuel for the long-range requirement that the USAF had specified for the airplane. With the outbreak of the Korean War, the US Air Force was faced with an urgent requirement for a more capable escort fighter plane. An improved version of the XF-88 was ordered as the F-101 Voodoo, to give Strategic Air Command the long-range escort aircraft that it needed for its Convair B-36 bombers; but upon realization that the potential range of the F-101 was actually inadequate for the task, this airplane was instead ordered into production for service with Tactical Air Command. The first F-101A was flown initially on September 29, 1954, demonstrating supersonic capability during its first flight, and the airplane began to enter service in early 1957. Later reconnaissance versions proved to be of great value in operations over North Vietnam and, after being replaced by RF-4Cs, continued to serve with the Air National Guard into the mid-1970s. The F-101B was powered by two 14,880-lb thrust afterburning Pratt & Whitney J57-P-55 turbojets, with a maximum speed of 1,221 mph at 40,000 feet, service ceiling of 54,800 feet, and range of 1,550 miles. Airplane armament was two MB-1 Genie missiles with nuclear warhead plus four AIM-4C, -4D, or -4G Falcon missiles, or six Falcon missiles. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
