Northrop T-38 Talon model airplane To meet a US government requirement for a high-performance lightweight fighter aircraft that would be suitable for supply to, and operation by, friendly nations via the Military Assistance Program, Northrop began the private-venture design of such an airplane in the mid-1950s. (Interestingly, however, the only export customer was Portugal, who received a total of twelve planes.) The first prototype of the aircraft flew on April 10, 1959; the first production T-38A entering service on March 17, 1961. The Talon, which seats instructor and pupil in tandem on ejection seats and has a fully powered control system, has gained one of the best safety and trouble-free service records of any supersonic aircraft in USAF service. As a result, when production of the airplane ended in early 1972, a total of 1,187 T-38s had been built for the USAF. As of 1992 some 700 of these remained in service. The T-38 was powered by two 3,850-lb afterburning thrust General Electric J85-GE-5A turbojets, with a maximum speed of 858 mph at 36,000 feet, service ceiling of 53,600 feet, and a range with maximum fuel of 1,093 miles. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
